Steve Robertson is a barrister. His practice includes commercial litigation, fraud law, competition and antitrust, including fair business practices, product regulation and liability, and medical negligence defence matters. He appears before all levels of court in Alberta, the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal, and the Competition Tribunal and has been counsel in precedent-setting decisions in the fields of fraud recovery and tort law in Alberta.
Individuals and corporations who have been defrauded seek Steve's services in order to quickly locate and recover the stolen assets. He has significant successful experience obtaining extraordinary court orders on an emergency basis to effect that recovery.
Steve has taught classes and seminars on civil fraud recovery to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Calgary Police Service Commercial Crime Sections, Alberta Justice Special Prosecutions Branch, the Integrated Market Enforcement Team, the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, and Mount Royal University Bissett School of Business, and has been an instructor and facilitator for the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education in several areas concerned with civil litigation and advocacy.
Direct marketers (including Internet marketers), advertisers, and mortgage brokers rely on Steve's advice to comply with the fair business practices provisions of the Competition Act, Alberta's Fair Trading Act and other consumer protection legislation, and to resolve conflicts with federal and provincial regulatory agencies.
Steve is an associate member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, and a director of the Calgary chapter of the A.C.F.E. Steve is a past chair of the Canadian Bar Association's National Health Law section, having previously held the positions of secretary-treasurer, vice-chair, and chair of that section
Acting for clients ranging from groups of defrauded investors to private corporations to public issuers to retail brokerage clients, Michael Mysak has a corporate/commercial litigation practice with an emphasis on fraud litigation, securities litigation, and shareholder disputes. He has successfully traced, frozen and recovered significant assets from both foreign and domestic defendants and has been involved in several precedent-setting decisions in the field of fraud recovery law in Alberta. Michael has also successfully pursued and defended various securities and shareholder disputes, including claims involving improper financial disclosure, oppression remedy claims and derivative actions.
In addition to a general commercial dispute practice, Michael also maintains an active practice in surface rights litigation, working to help diverse clients including resource companies conducting operations throughout Alberta and private landowners facing expropriation by government authorities.
Michael appears before all levels of court in Alberta, the Federal Court of Canada, the Alberta Securities Commission and several administrative tribunals.
Prior to joining Bennett Jones, he served as the law clerk to the Honourable E.D. Bayda, Chief Justice of Saskatchewan, and the Honourable M.A. Gerwing of the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal.
Michael is an instructor on civil discovery for the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education (CPLED) and has taught classes on civil law at Mount Royal University. He is also a regular judge at the Canadian round of the Jessup International Moot competition.
Michael is a board member of Calgary Legal Guidance and is a former board member of the Canadian Club of Calgary and the Calgary Blockwatch Council
